Obituary: Maxine S. (Stanbery) Toliver - Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Grove, OK
FEBRUARY 19, 1924 ~ SEPTEMBER 16, 2013 (AGE 89)
Maxine Stanbery Toliver, daughter of George E. Stanbery and Iva E. Stanbery was born in Verdigris Oklahoma, February 1924 and passed away September 16, 2013 in Phoenix, Oregon at the age of 89. Maxine lived in Grove, attending Grove High School until she enlisted in the Army in 1944. She served in the Philippines receiving the "Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Medal" with Bronze Star and the "Philippines Liberation Ribbon" with a Bronze Star. It was there she met her future husband, Emery H. Toliver. She married (Hank) in 1946 in Reno Nevada and spent the next 25 years living in various parts of the world supporting Hank in his military career and raising her stepson, Stanley H. Toliver. During this time she earned a 'Bachelors Degree' in Arts and Science from 'Etudes University Internationale'. While living in Japan she was secretary to the Adjutant General of the Japan Replacement Training Center and while living in Orleans, France, taught typing in the Army Education program. Later, when 'Hank' was stationed in Saigon Vietnam, she taught English to Vietnamese children. Maxine held various positions in the Officer's Wives Club and was an enthusiastic Bridge player, earning the title 'Grand Master'. In 1968, after retiring, 'Hank' and 'Mac' moved back to Grove and built a house on the shores of Grand Lake , not far from where she grew up. Never one to stand still, Maxine's golden years were spent in community service. She was active in the Eastern Star, serving as 'Worthy Grand Matron' 1990-1991 She baked many of her famous pecan pies for the American Legion and American legion Auxiliary as well as the Eastern Star's bake sales. She attended The First Baptist Church of Grove. Maxine was a tireless giver, never missing a blood drive, a fund raiser for the animal shelter, the Shriners Hospital and many non-profit charities Maxine was preceded in death by her husband 'Hank' Toliver in 2003, and an older brother, Lavon Stanbery and older sister, Ernestine Stanbery Ogden. She is survived by her younger brother, Billy Allen Stanbery, his wife, Johna Lee, and son, Stanley Toliver. She has one granddaughter, Nicoya Hecht and two great-grandsons, Kaden Hecht, 17 and Gracen Hecht, 15. Maxine was a faithful wife, a good mother, a kind neighbor and a loyal friend. She will be missed by many. The funeral service will be held at the Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 10AM with Pastor Jim Paslay, presiding. The burial will follow at the Olympus Cemetery in Grove, OK. The family will greet friends on Friday from 6PM to 8PM at the Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home in Grove, OK. Arrangements are under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Grove, OK.
