Degree of Pocahontas (Daughters of Pocahontas)

DEGREE OF POCAHONTAS (DAUGHTERS OF POCAHONTAS) - The Degree of Pocahontas are the female auxiliary of the Improved Order of Red Men, an American fraternal order.  The Degree was founded in Elmira, New York.  The idea of creating a female Degree was first broached in the early 1850s, however it wasn't until the IORMs "Great Council" of 1885 that Degree was approved.  The first local chapter, the Wenonah Council, #1 of Philadelphia whose "Council Fire was lighted on the 28th Sleep of Cold Moon, G. S. D.

Dragonfly

DRAGONFLY - Represents immortality and regeneration.  The dragonfly is a symbol of change and transformation, joy, and lightness.  It can also symbolize a connection with nature's spirits.  Japan made the dragonfly its national emblem. In some Native American traditions, it is also a symbol of the departed souls.

Dove, Decending

DOVES DECENDING - Represents the Holy Spirit's decent from heaven to accompany the soul home to heaven.  

Matthew 3:16 (KJV) - “And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:”

DOVES RESTING - Resting or Sitting Doves represent innocence and peace.  

Dove, Ascending

DOVE ASCENDING -  Seen in both Christian and Jewish cemeteries, the dove is a symbol of resurrection, innocence and peace. An ascending dove, as pictured here, represents the transport of the departed's soul to heaven

Curtains or Drapes

CURTAINS OR DRAPES - Represent mourning.  You know how some folks say a person “saw curtains” as a euphemism for death? Those curtains refer to the veil that separates the living from the dead who are mourning the end of a loved ones life on earth.

Order of DeMolay

CROWN WITH KNIGHT'S HEAD, CROSSED SWORDS, MOON & STARS (ORDER OF DEMOLAY) - DeMolay International (also known as the Order of DeMolay), founded in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1919, is an international fraternal organization for young men ages 12 to 21. It was named for Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar.

Cross, Southern Cross of Honor (Confederate States of America)

CROSS, SOUTHERN CROSS OF HONOR (CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA) - Found on the gravestones of Confederate Soldiers and Veterans. The Southern Cross of Honor was a postbellum honor presented by the United Daughters of the Confederacy to members of the United Confederate Veterans.

Crown with Cross

CROWN WITH CROSS - The Cross and Crown (a cross passing through a crown), is a Christian symbol appearing in many churches, particularly Roman Catholic.  It is often interpreted as symbolizing the reward (or victory) in heaven (the crown) coming after the trials in this life (the cross).  This symbol sometimes denotes a member of the York Rite Masons.

James 1:12 (KJV) -  Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

Crown

CROWN - Represents the glory of life after death and the victory and triumph over death.  As men fashioned crowns out of more enduring substances like gold, they added little spikes to call to mind power and authority.
